DOCTOR WHO

BBC 1 *Saturday 7pm

DOCTOR WHO may be a brand new show for Saturday nights on BBC1 but the programme his a history as long as a stripy multi-coloured scarf.

The programme was first broadcast on BBC1 on Saturday 23 November 1963. The days of black and white television and only three UK national television channels. It was devised as an adventure science fiction (with more than a hint of an educational element) drama series for all the family.

The programme continued to shown on BBCtv until 1989 (twenty-six years!), then returned in 1996 with a TV movie, and now, in 2005, returns with a brand new series.

The central character was (and still is) a friendly, mysterious time-space travelling alien who calls himself 'the Doctor'.

He journeys through time-space in a craft called the TARDIS (an acronym that stands for 'Time And Relative Dimension In Space').

In his space-time craft, the Doctor can travel anywhere - he can move through space, forward in time, backward in time, sideways and throughout our current time.

You are in for the trip of your lifetime.

If you are new to DOCTOR WHO, read THE BASICS (see right).

* DOCTOR WHO repeated on BBC3 Sundays - check listings for times.

THE BASICS - The Doctor

He comes from the planet Gallifrey, belonging to the race known as 'Time Lords'. Long ago. Time Lords discovered the ability to travel within time and space (see The Basics - The TARDIS)

A Time Lord has two-hearts and the ability to change its body if it 'dies' up to twelve times (therefore, 13 different appearances). This is called 'regeneration'; the Doctor has changed eight times.

Earth is his favourite planet but is often frustrated that the planet's population is useless in defending itself from hostile aliens.

The Doctor is a jovial, witty, honest and determined man, working on the side of 'good' against 'evil'.

THE BASICS - The TARDIS

The time-space travelling craft, the TARDIS, has the ability to change its exterior shape to blend into its surroundings. Unfortunately, in 1963, after it departed Earth this ability broke-down and the TARDIS remained as a old fashioned blue Police Public Call Box.

The TARDIS has another unique feature - it is bigger inside than outside. Walking through the doors of the Police Box, you enter another dimension - an infinite dimension which has infinite number of rooms. It's easy to get lost inside.

THE BASICS - HOSTILE ALIENS

In his travels, the Doctor has encountered hundreds of alien species - some friendly and some very, very nasty ones.

THE DALEKS - Mutant creatures within an armoured metal casing, complete with deadly weaponry.

THE CYBERMEN - Powerful, silver, eight-foot tall humanoids with the majority of their flesh-and-blood replaced with cybernetic implants. Kindest and compassion emotions replaced by brutal logic.

THE MASTER - Like the Doctor, a Time Lord but thoroughly evil. A master of hypnotism and disguise.
