13 JANUARY 2010 | PERSONALITY | ECCLESTON does LENNON
BBC PRESS OFFICE is promoting the new season of drama (winter/spring) with a compilation video presentation.
In addition to the return of a certain Time Lord there is Billie Piper's return to BBC DRAMA and Christopher Eccleston's BBC FOUR "biopic" of John Lennon titled LENNON NAKED. See right.
LENNON NAKED charts his transition from "Beatle John" to enduring and enigmatic icon. It covers a period of wildly fluctuating fortunes from 1967-71; a time of worldwide adulation at one extreme, a combination of frustration and despair at the other. Writer Robert Jones articulates the burden of genius, as well as issues of fatherhood and fame in this 90-minute film. Ben Stephenson , Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning says: "Securing Christopher Eccleston to play John Lennon is further testament to the calibre of drama on BBC Four."
12 JANUARY 2010 | MERCHANDISE | VWORP FANZINE
Once in a while something special floats into the time/space fan vortex. Coming soon to a letterbox (if you order a copy) near you is VORWP! VWORP! - a retro-styled fanzine that pays homage to the original DOCTOR WHO WEEKLY magazine of the late 1970s and beyond.
And it looks good too - inside & out. Here's the publisher details:
It's a non-profit-making, full-colour glossy 80-page perfect-bound fanzine that celebrates Doctor Who in comic strip form as well as, in our first volume, thirty years of DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE. Contributors include many media/ Who luminaries, writers, artists, scholars and broadcasters, as well as up and coming comic writers and artists.
There's a full list on our website, as well as some preview pages. We've got two covers, the first a jam session between fourteen of the finest artists in Who comic history: Baxter Sullivan (1st Doctor), Roger Langridge (2nd Doctor), Ben Willsher (3rd Doctor), Adrian Salmon (4th Doctor), Dan McDaid (5th Doctor), Sean Longcroft (6th Doctor), Lee Sulivan (7th Doctor), Martin Geraghty (8th Doctor), Mike Collins (9th Doctor), Rob Davis (10th Doctor) and Leighton Noyes (11th Doctor), with cameos from Dave Gibbons, Dicky Howett and John Ridgway. The second is a nostalgic pastiche of a DOCTOR WHO WEEKLY cover, designed for us by DWW's original editor, Dez Skinn, who has been our adviser throughout the project; the back cover's by 30 Days of Night, Fell and Wormwood artist Ben Templesmith.
We've even got transfers and a Dalek scene to apply them to, drawn by Paul Grist, just like the first few issues of the Weekly !

8 JANUARY 2010 | MERCHANDISE | THE MASQUE OF MANDRAGORA
Issue 417 of DWM is published this month with the new Doctor featured on the front cover, and with "showrunner-head writer", Steven Moffat attempting (and failing) to explain his illogical (lacking common-sense too) adoption of "SERIES 1" for the 2010 drama.
ISSUE 417 cover
And the SERIES 5 versus SERIES 1 farrago continues.
Moffat explains that:
"It's Series Thirty-One of Doctor Who, and it's Series One of Matt Smith's Doctor, Those are both real numbers. I submit that 'Series Five of Doctor Who' means absolutely nothing unless you really believe that Matt Smith is the third Doctor.
Everyone knows he's the Eleventh Doctor so that means it's definitely not 'Series Five'. Whichever number you choose, 'Series Five' is the one that's flawed."
No. Simply, no. (and it's a "season" not "series" that is relative to the complete DOCTOR WHO history). All of the BBC branding for this new DOCTOR WHO series (2005 onwards) states SERIES 1 started in 2005, and all the floundering fake explanations will not make his decision anything but plain stupid. BBC Branding Managers must be scratching their heads to the avoidable confusion. See right.
I asked my six year old about SERIES 1 and he said "the shorted haired Doctor with Rose". From the mouths of the target audience there, Moffat.
To put the case for "common sense man", Matt Smith's first series of stories is SERIES 5 or, based upon the full DOCTOR WHO history, SEASON 31.
7 JANUARY 2010 | SERIES 5 | 11th DOCTOR PROMO PICTURE
BBC PICTURES has released the first promotional picture featuring Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor, holding his new Sonic Screwdriver.

2 JANUARY 2010 | MERCHANDISE | ICE WARRIORS AND SERIES 5?
05.01.2010 - PLAY.COM have been forced - by whom? - to withdraw the information leaving a minor adjustment.
Whether a mistake or a mix-up, but PLAY.COM have added "sales copy" to their promotion of the CLASSIC SERIES action figures - for the Ice Warrior toy - that is "interesting". It does not quite flow but nonetheless:
Reaching up to 7 feet tall, Ice Warriors were a large imposing race of reptilian humanoids from the planet Mars whose civilization was destroyed during The Doctor and companion Amy's search for a segment from the Key to Time.
